    Het minisymposium vond plaats in de fraaie kapel van Hogeschool van Hall Larenstein. Gastheer Arjen Heerema, adjunct directeur Animals and Business, heette de aanwezigen welkom. “We zijn er trots op dat het symposium over circulair terreinbeheer plaatsvindt op onze hogeschool. Het onderwerp, van gras tot bodemverbeteraar of papier, sluit naadloos aan bij innovatie en duurzaamheid: sleutelthema’s in ons lesprogramma. We sluiten daarbij aan op vraagstukken uit de praktijk, door de verbinding te leggen met overheden en marktpartijen; ook werken we met lectoraten.     Rijkswaterstaat Oost-Nederland is vanaf het eerste begin lid van de Biomassa Alliantie. “Daar zijn we best trots op, want al worden we meestal gezien als een organisatie die ‘iets met wegen en water doet’, we hebben ook enorm veel potentieel aan biomassa. Kijk maar eens naar alle wegbermen of kijk naar de gebieden langs de rivieren die wij in beheer hebben. We willen en moeten circulair denken, niet alleen uit economische motieven, maar vooral uit noodzaak om zorgvuldig om te gaan met onze aarde. Dat zijn we verschuldigd aan de toekomstige generaties. Het geeft veel elan aan onze organisatie om daaraan bij te dragen, al zijn er soms hobbels die genomen moeten worden.

    Waarom ik de Biomassa Alliantie belangrijk vind? De alliantie verbindt de vraag naar maaisel en het aanbod ervan. Dat is essentieel om de cirkel van het terreinbeheer te sluiten. Bovendien geldt: hoe meer mensen, hoe meer denkkracht en inspiratie en hoe meer energie. Dus als je het niet alleen wil doen, sluit je dan ook aan bij de Biomassa Alliantie!’’

    Vier nieuwe leden traden toe tot de Biomassa Alliantie: waterschap Drents Overijsselse Delta, waterschap De Dommel, waterschap Vechtstromen en gemeente Dalfsen. Symbolisch zetten zij hun handtekening op een puzzelstuk, dat diende als één van de fundamenten van het nieuwe huis dat de leden van de Biomassa Alliantie met elkaar willen bouwen om tot circulair terreinbeheer te komen. Het symposium vormde hiertoe het startsein.

    De Biomassa Alliantie breidt uit

    Kringlooplandbouw staat centraal op het bedrijf van Matthijs de Haan, ecoboer in de Betuwe. Waar hij vroeger kruidenhooi uit Duitsland invoerde voor zijn koeien, gebruikt hij nu het maaisel van het waterschap. Jan de Kock, inwoner van Rivierenland en al jaren betrokken bij duurzaamheid in de regio is enthousiast: ‘We hebben een hele bijzondere boer hier in het gebied, die goed voor de bodem en het leven daarin zorgt. Ik hoop van harte dat er meer boeren komen die in kringlopen denken (en doen). Bermmaaisel is één aspect hierin, maar er is meer nodig. Ik wil een circulaire terreinbeweging op gang krijgen in Rivierenland.”

    Ecoboer Matthijs de Haan: voorbeeld van een bedrijf dat denkt in kringlopen

    Wormen voor bodemverbetering

    Speciale gast van het symposium, Michael Quintern,  vertelt over ‘zijn’ wormenboerderij in Nieuw Zeeland. Hij voorziet daar ongeveer een miljard wormen van eten, drinken en een leefplek.  ‘Eigenlijk zoals jullie dat doen met koeien en varkens’, aldus Quintern. De wormen consumeren organische stof, reduceren het volume tot maar liefst 80% en scheiden het uit in de vorm van ‘vermicompost’. Dit materiaal is goed te exporteren en is veel waardevoller dan ‘gewone’ compost.

    Quintern is onder andere in Nederland om te adviseren over een pilotproject in Winterswijk, waar wormen worden ingezet om humus te produceren. Bermmaaisel vormt één van de bestanddelen van hun  voedsel.

    Waterschap De Dommel treedt toe tot de Biomassa Alliantie. ‘Onze aardbol moet nog langer mee.’

    Waterschap De Dommel is één van de nieuw toetredende leden van de Biomassa Alliantie. Lex Huijbers, lid van het dagelijks bestuur, licht toe dat zijn waterschap al sinds 2006 bezig is met de ‘kleine kringloop’, waarbij maaisel wordt benut voor bodemverbetering. Boeren kunnen het maaisel gebruiken om de bodemvruchtbaarheid te verhogen; voor het waterschap heeft het ‘oogsten van maaisel’ voordelen voor de waterkwaliteit en de waterberging. Huibers: ‘Het sluit aan bij onze milieudoelstellingen. Onze aardbol moet immers nog langer mee dan vandaag.’

    Met ons proces winnen we met succes waardevolle  vezels uit gras

    Edwin Hamoen vertelt over het raffinageproces dat zijn bedrijf NewFoss heeft ontwikkeld om gras te scheiden in 2 componenten: vezels en overige materialen (zoals vetten/zuren en eiwitten). Op kleine schaal wordt het proces al toegepast. Hamoen: ‘We ontvangen bijvoorbeeld gras uit natuurgebieden, waaruit we de vezels halen en die naar Friesland brengen om te worden verwerkt in eierdoosjes. Op grotere schaal zijn we betrokken bij Van Berm naar Bladzijde, waarvoor we maaisel omzetten in een grondstof waar Parenco papier en karton van maakt. Het gaat om enorme hoeveelheden: zo’n 7000 vrachtwagens per jaar. Samen met andere partners proberen we de keten te organiseren. Iedereen kan meeprofiteren van de waarde van maaisel. Het is niet alleen een duurzaam product, maar vormt ook de input van een duurzaam businessmodel.’

    Circulair terreinbeheer past bij de provincie Gelderland

    Volgens gedeputeerde Michiel Scheffer zijn er drie redenen waarom circulair terreinbeheer zo goed bij de provincie past. In de eerste plaats wil de provincie zelf een circulair voorbeeld zijn voor de omgeving en daar hoort het bermbeheer bij. Ten tweede draagt het bij aan bewustwording . Ongeveer 0,5 tot 2% van de bedrijven in Gelderland zijn circulair bezig en een project als dit stimuleert meer bedrijven om dat principe ook toe te passen. En ten derde gaan er grote volumes maaisel om. Scheffer: ‘Dat is belangrijk om van pilots tot grootschalige processen over te kunnen gaan. De komende jaren moeten we (conform de aanbevelingen van de Raad van de Leefomgeving) aansluiten bij sectoren waar kritische massa is. Door op grote schaal te innoveren, kunnen we een voorbeeld neerzetten.

    Circulaire economie is belangrijk, we hebben geen keus. We zijn heel hard bezig de grondstoffen op te maken en denken de aarde in pacht te hebben. Maar de balans is zoek. We hebben een politieke rol om een omslag te maken. Ook in het regeerakkoord wordt de circulaire economie specifiek genoemd. Met als doel om daar waar wet- en regelgeving in de weg zit of juist nodig is, een stap moet worden gezet. Het is belangrijk om op bestuurlijk niveau samen belemmeringen weg te nemen!’

    11-OKT-2017 – Op woensdag 11 oktober vond tijdens de Europese Week van Regio’s en Steden een brainstormsessie Landbouw plaats. Daarbij stonden het project Mineral Valley Twente en het programma Circulair Terreinbeheer centraal. Wethouder Erik Volmerink van de gemeente Tubbergen was ook in Brussel om zijn verhaal te delen.

     ‘Onze pilot Twents bermmaaisel verrijkt bodemleven, binnen het programma Circulair Terreinbeheer sluit naadloos aan op het toekomstig landbouwbeleid’, aldus Volmerink. ‘Agrariërs van de vruchtbare kringloop Overijssel onderzoeken drie jaar lang of bermmaaisel inderdaad helpt om de bodem – en daarmee de gewassen – beter te voeden.’

    Het verhogen van het organisch gehalte in de bodem heeft volgens Volmerink meerdere voordelen. Hij licht toe: ‘Eén hiervan is dat er meer koolstof in de landbouwbodem wordt opgeslagen. Het vastleggen van CO2 draagt bij aan het tegengaan van de negatieve gevolgen van klimaatverandering en speelt daarom een belangrijke rol binnen het gemeenschappelijke landbouwbeleid.

    Verder is een hoger organisch stofgehalte gunstig voor het vochthoudend vermogen van de bodem, de bodemvruchtbaarheid en voor het bodemleven. Het organische stofgehalte is belangrijk voor een goede groei van gewassen en is daarmee direct van belang voor de boer.’

    De bodemvruchtbaarheid heeft voldoende aandacht gekregen tijdens de Europese Week van Regio’s en Steden en krijgt binnenkort een vervolg in Brussel. Deze zogeheten Landbouwdag wordt begin 2018 georganiseerd in samenwerking met de Regio Twente.

    13-OKT-2015 – Om de verschillende schakels binnen de (rest)biomassaketen  – zoals aanbieders, verwerkers en gebruikers – dichter bij elkaar te brengen, was er op 8 september 2015 een praktijkcursus in opdracht van de Biomassa Alliantie.

    De deelnemers zochten in het waterschapshuis te Apeldoorn naar manieren om missende schakels in de keten voor restbiomassa te identificeren en in te vullen.

    Doel van de praktijkcursus was ook om een impuls te geven aan de markt voor de biomassa die vrijkomt bij ons groenbeheer. Ondanks dat het niet eenvoudig is om met de juiste partijen – én met dezelfde mindset – aan tafel te komen, was er veel enthousiasme bij de deelnemende partners. Vooral de toepassingsrichtingen ‘biomassa als bodemstructuurverbeteraar’ en ‘rest-biomassa als bouwmateriaal’ lijken vruchtbaar.

    Biomassa als bodemstructuurverbeteraar
    Steeds meer agrariërs kampen met problemen van de bodemvruchtbaarheid. Doordat de afbraak/afvoer van organische stof groter is dan de aanvoer, vermindert de structuur van de bodem, het bodemleven, de beschikbaarheid van nutriënten en het vochtgehalte. Hierdoor neemt de bodemvruchtbaarheid en het voortbrengend vermogen af. Traditionele bemestingsmethodes voegen wel nutriënten toe maar dragen niet bij aan het organisch stofgehalte van de bodem.

    De biomassa die vrijkomt bij het beheer en onderhoud van het landschap (zoals natuurgras) zou voor de landbouw een waardevolle grondstof kunnen zijn als het ons lukt deze in te zetten als bodemstructuurverbeteraar van de landbouwpercelen. Hierbij spelen nog vragen omtrent de regelgeving, zoals: welke biomassa mag je gebruiken op je bedrijf en welke invloed heeft dat op de mestboekhouding. Er lijkt ook een kans te zijn om deelproducten uit andere biomassaketens in te zetten voor bodemverbetering en er zijn nieuwe ontwikkelingen op dit gebied.

    Biomassa als bouwmateriaal
    Biomassa – met name hout – wordt uiteraard al veelvuldig gebruikt als bouwmateriaal. De biomassa die vrijkomt uit het groenbeheer heeft echter ook de potentie om verwerkt te worden tot groen bouwmateriaal. Tijdens de cursus blijkt dat voor de verdere ontwikkeling van deze producten behoefte is aan regionale biomassa enerzijds en regionale afnemers anderzijds. De verdere doorontwikkeling en operationalisering van technieken kan versneld worden door het beschikbaar stellen van locaties waar een productietest kan plaatsvinden.

    De conclusie was dat er nog steeds partijen ontbreken die nodig zijn om de keten te sluiten. Om hier aan te werken was er een samenzijn op 7 oktober tijdens OASE, waarbij we onder de deelnemers op zoek gingen naar ontbrekende schakels en/of kennis. Vervolgens is er eind november een laatste bijeenkomst in 2015 waarbij we opnieuw focussen op de specifieke ketens. Kun jij ons hierbij helpen?
