    2022-03-24 Met trots presenteren we het derde magazine van het programma Circulair Terreinbeheer. Na twee eerdere magazines – die waren gericht op de waarde van maaisel en op transitie – staat in dit magazine ‘ketenverantwoordelijkheid’ centraal.

    De kern van het derde magazine is hoe we tot een echte circulaire economie kunnen komen. Dat vraagt om een cultuuromslag. Alle ketenpartners, van terreinbeheerders, agrariërs, producenten, loonwerkers, vervoerders, omgevingsdiensten tot overheden zullen hun verantwoordelijkheid moeten nemen om samen tot een nieuwe praktijk te komen. Dat is meer dan bijvoorbeeld het bewerken van maaisel tot compost. Het betekent dat grondstoffen worden geoogst met een doel voor ogen en dat de benodigde kwaliteit gedurende het hele proces wordt geborgd.

    Met elkaar moeten we de verantwoordelijkheid nemen voor de kwaliteit van ons milieu en de volksgezondheid en moeten we fundamenteel anders omgaan met grondstoffen. Samen een nieuw circulair huis bouwen: dat moet het uitgangspunt zijn.

    2022-03 Eind 2020 startte Wageningen University & Research (WUR) de uitvoering van het Kennisprogramma CT. De resultaten van 2021 worden dit voorjaar gepubliceerd. Tijdens een overleg presenteerde WUR de belangrijkste bevindingen.

    De presentatie vond plaats tijdens een overleg tussen het programma CT, het CT Kernteam Maaisel en Blad en de ministeries IenW en LNV. Allereerst werden de vragen toegelicht waarop een antwoord nodig is om tot nieuw beleid te komen (de zogenaamde RISMAN-vragen).

    Daarna presenteerde WUR de aanpak van het – nog lopende – onderzoek. Een belangrijk onderdeel hiervan is de analyse van bodemverbeteraars die worden gebruikt in de aangesloten pilots (maaisel, lokale bodemverbeteraars, bokashi van maaisel, bokashi van blad en bokashi-mengsel). Omdat voor veel van deze producten nog geen normen bestaan, wordt de kwaliteit van de toegepast bodemverbeteraars vergeleken met de eisen die worden gesteld aan Keurcompost. Daarnaast wordt bepaald welke effecten het toepassen van de bodemverbeteraars heeft op gewasopbrengst, het bodemleven en het milieu. Dit gebeurt via veldproeven op proeflocaties van WUR en via laboratoriumonderzoek.

    Belangrijkste bevindingen

    Uit de resultaten van het onderzoek dat in 2021 is uitgevoerd blijkt dat het merendeel van de geanalyseerde bodemverbeteraars van goede kwaliteit was, wat betreft gehalten aan metalen, arseen, residuen van bestrijdingsmiddelen en overige organische microverontreinigingen (zoals PAK’s, minerale olie en PFAS). Van de enkele monsters die niet aan eisen voldeden waren de oorzaken veelal te verklaren door de herkomst van het maaisel en het blad.

    Verder blijkt dat de bodemverbeteraars voor een (tijdelijke) verbetering van het bodemleven zorgden. Of het hier ook gaat om lange termijn effecten, zoals bijvoorbeeld de opbouw van (stabiele) organische stof en eventueel andere ecosysteemdiensten moet duidelijk worden uit meerjarige proeven. Wel leek het erop dat er bij het toepassen van bodemverbeteraars op één van de proefvelden (bij Lelystad, op klei) stikstof gebonden werd, waardoor de gewasproductie iets afnam.

    In samenwerking met boer Pieter van der Valk, het Ministerie van I&W en Universiteit Wageningen, wordt de tussenstand opgemaakt met betrekking tot het composteren in de regio. Naast plenaire sessies worden in workshops handreikingen gedaan om ook zelf aan de slag te gaan, zowel overheid als agrariër.

    De prijs heeft als doel om aan te tonen wat de circulaire economie kan betekenen in Nederland. Inschrijving is mogelijk tot en met 25 november 2018. De finalisten worden bekend gemaakt op 17 december. Tijdens de week van de circulaire economie, 14 tot 18 januari, vindt de finale plaats.

    Om in aanmerking te komen voor de prijs moet het project een aantal kenmerken hebben. Nederland Circulair! noemt “circulariteit”, “schaalbaarheid”, “samenwerking” en “businessmodel” als kenmerken.

    Bij terreinbeheer komt biomassa vrij zoals gras, bladeren en hout. De partners van de Biomassa Alliantie zien dat als waardevolle grondstoffen. De partners zien in dat de ontwikkeling van de biobased economy van belang is voor de toekomst van de Nederlandse economie. Daarom investeren zij in kennisontwikkeling en het verkennen van kansen voor concrete projecten die tot een duurzame omslag leiden. De Biomassa Alliantie is een feit na de ondertekening van een Letter of Intent op woensdag 6 november op Natuurderij Keizersrande te Diepenveen. Juist de gouden driehoek van praktijk (terreinbeheer), wetenschap (kennisinstituten) en beleid (overheden) biedt een stevig fundament voor een solide en duurzame verandering.

    3-NOV-2014 – De leden van de Biomassa Alliantie waren op 23 september te gast bij Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe in Apeldoorn om het te hebben over voortgang, barrières en om nieuwe initiatieven te delen. Naast de vaste alliantiepartners waren ook andere belangstellenden aanwezig. De alliantie krijgt een steeds grotere bekendheid.

    De middag begon met een terugmelding van de projecten die de vorige bijeenkomst zijn gedefinieerd. Harm Beekhuis (Waterschap Vallei en Veluwe) nam de groep mee in zijn zoektocht naar de mogelijke afzet voor biomassa als veevoer. Bert Annevelink (Wageningen University & Research centre) vertelde over de stand van zaken bij het project Haarlose Veld, waar biomassa gebruikt gaat worden als bodemverbeteraar. Tijdens beide presentaties werd duidelijk dat er voor de toepassing nog veel juridische en praktische vragen zijn: “Wie is productverantwoordelijk?”, ”Hoe zit het met de mesthuishouding?” en: “Hoe gaan we om met giftige planten en bestrijdings-middelen”.

    Rick Staudt, recent afgestudeerd aan VHL, presenteerde de resultaten van het afstudeeronderzoek naar logistiek en opslag van biomassa langs de IJssel en het Twentekanaal. Yuri Wolf (Rijkswaterstaat) gaf een korte toelichting over de kansen voor de Biomassa Alliantie binnen het prestatiecontract voor het hierboven genoemde riviertraject.

    Tom Bade (Triple E) inspireerde met zijn ervaringen als ondernemer op het raakvlak van natuur en economie. Hiervoor werkt hij in opdracht van Rijkswaterstaat aan een business case voor hoogwaardige afzetting van “laagwaardige” biomassa. Rutger van der Brugge (Deltares) presenteerde mogelijke toepassingen van bioplastics en hij liet de groep ook een verrassend eigen idee zien.

    In kleine groepjes werden – in World Café stijl – de project(ideeën) besproken, verrijkt met kennis, ervaring, onderzoek en netwerk. Op de achtergrond werden prachtige beelden van Natuurderij Keizersrande getoond.

    De middag zat vol energie en de discussies maakten duidelijk dat er nog veel van elkaar te leren valt en dat er zowel concrete vraag naar als concreet aanbod van kennis boven tafel is gekomen. Voor het actief en online delen van deze kennis gaan de partners van de Biomassa Alliantie nu gebruik maken van een intern online hulpmiddel (Basecamp), zodat nieuwe vragen en antwoorden snel hun weg kunnen vinden.

    13-OKT-2015 – Om de verschillende schakels binnen de (rest)biomassaketen – zoals aanbieders, verwerkers en gebruikers – dichter bij elkaar te brengen, was er op 8 september 2015 een praktijkcursus in opdracht van de Biomassa Alliantie.

    De deelnemers zochten in het waterschapshuis te Apeldoorn naar manieren om missende schakels in de keten voor restbiomassa te identificeren en in te vullen.

    Doel van de praktijkcursus was ook om een impuls te geven aan de markt voor de biomassa die vrijkomt bij ons groenbeheer. Ondanks dat het niet eenvoudig is om met de juiste partijen – én met dezelfde mindset – aan tafel te komen, was er veel enthousiasme bij de deelnemende partners. Vooral de toepassingsrichtingen ‘biomassa als bodemstructuurverbeteraar’ en ‘rest-biomassa als bouwmateriaal’ lijken vruchtbaar.

    Biomassa als bodemstructuurverbeteraar
    Steeds meer agrariërs kampen met problemen van de bodemvruchtbaarheid. Doordat de afbraak/afvoer van organische stof groter is dan de aanvoer, vermindert de structuur van de bodem, het bodemleven, de beschikbaarheid van nutriënten en het vochtgehalte. Hierdoor neemt de bodemvruchtbaarheid en het voortbrengend vermogen af. Traditionele bemestingsmethodes voegen wel nutriënten toe maar dragen niet bij aan het organisch stofgehalte van de bodem.

    De biomassa die vrijkomt bij het beheer en onderhoud van het landschap (zoals natuurgras) zou voor de landbouw een waardevolle grondstof kunnen zijn als het ons lukt deze in te zetten als bodemstructuurverbeteraar van de landbouwpercelen. Hierbij spelen nog vragen omtrent de regelgeving, zoals: welke biomassa mag je gebruiken op je bedrijf en welke invloed heeft dat op de mestboekhouding. Er lijkt ook een kans te zijn om deelproducten uit andere biomassaketens in te zetten voor bodemverbetering en er zijn nieuwe ontwikkelingen op dit gebied.

     

    Biomassa als bouwmateriaal
    Biomassa – met name hout – wordt uiteraard al veelvuldig gebruikt als bouwmateriaal. De biomassa die vrijkomt uit het groenbeheer heeft echter ook de potentie om verwerkt te worden tot groen bouwmateriaal. Tijdens de cursus blijkt dat voor de verdere ontwikkeling van deze producten behoefte is aan regionale biomassa enerzijds en regionale afnemers anderzijds. De verdere doorontwikkeling en operationalisering van technieken kan versneld worden door het beschikbaar stellen van locaties waar een productietest kan plaatsvinden.

    De conclusie was dat er nog steeds partijen ontbreken die nodig zijn om de keten te sluiten. Om hier aan te werken was er een samenzijn op 7 oktober tijdens OASE, waarbij we onder de deelnemers op zoek gingen naar ontbrekende schakels en/of kennis. Vervolgens is er eind november een laatste bijeenkomst in 2015 waarbij we opnieuw focussen op de specifieke ketens. Kun jij ons hierbij helpen?

    26-OKT-2015 – OASE, het netwerkevenement van Waterschap Rijn en IJssel, vond plaats op woensdag 7 oktober. Als feestelijke afsluiting was er de toetreding van twee nieuwe partijen tot de Biomassa Alliantie.

    In deze alliantie hebben terreineigenaren en kennisinstellingen zich verenigd om samen toe te werken naar een Biobased Economy. De nieuwe leden van de Alliantie zijn Hogeschool Van Hall Larenstein en Waterschap Rijn en IJssel. Namens de huidige leden van de Biomassa Alliantie werden zij welkom geheten door drs. J.C. van Hees, directeur Netwerkontwikkeling RWS Oost-Nederland.

    OASE vormt een jaarlijkse ontmoetingsplaats voor overheden, bestuurders, ondernemers en andere maatschappelijke organisaties in de Achterhoek en de Liemers. Centraal thema tijdens OASE was dit jaar “de verborgen kracht van water”. Het team van Self Supporting River Systems (SSRS) van Rijkswaterstaat was verantwoordelijk voor de invulling van het deelthema biomassa. Met de partners van de Biomassa Alliantie streven zij naar hoogwaardige biobased toepassingen van de biomassa die vrijkomt bij het beheer.

    In de praktijk blijkt dat het vaak wel al technisch mogelijk is om biomassa te verwerken tot biobased producten, maar dat er schakels ontbreken om de complete ketens sluitend te krijgen. In twee workshops hebben we gesproken over wat en wie nog nodig zijn om de ketens voor biomassa te sluiten. Het is van belang dat daarbij iedereen in beweging komt, van biomassaproducent tot eindgebruiker en alles daartussen in.

    Hoe sluiten we de biomassa-ketens voor bodemverbetering en biobased bouwmaterialen? Aan de hand van onderstaande infogram is tijdens OASE gezocht naar ontbrekende schakels in de keten.     Waarom zouden we van de Berm een Bladzijde maken?
    Op dit moment wordt al het stengelige, stekelige en kruidige biomassa van bermen en oevers afgevoerd als afval. Dat is jammer, want we zouden deze grasachtige biomassa ook als waardevolle grondstof kunnen zien. Om waarde aan dit maaisel toe te voegen, hebben de ondertekenaars van de intentieverklaring van Berm tot Bladzijde zich verenigd om deze biomassa om te toveren tot karton. Maar daarvoor moet nog wel wat gebeuren..

    Business model
    Allereerst moet er een business model ontwikkeld worden om dit alles werkbaar én haalbaar te maken. En dat is precies waar het op deze dag om draait! Ver-tegenwoordigers van alle partijen, van strategie tot uitvoering, komen bijeen om een business model uit te werken om samen de verspilling van grasachtige biomassa tegen te gaan.

    En wat bereiken we daarmee?
    Behalve van afval grondstof maken, zorgen we ervoor dat alle partners in de keten hun eigen businessplan kunnen maken. Wat daarbij cruciaal is, is dat iedereen weet wat er van hem verwacht wordt en dat we op elkaar kunnen rekenen.

    Waar doen we dit?
    Welke plek om dit vraagstuk te tackelen is geschikter dan FabCity? FabCity is een tijdelijke campus én groene, zelfvoorzienende stad met 50 innovatieve paviljoenen, installaties en prototypes. We waren te gast in de World in a Shell bij Hans Kalliwoda (www.worldinashell.net).
